BackUkrainian resettlement student Information Evening
Posted on: 25/09/2024We are pleased to share highlights from yesterday's impactful information evening for Ukrainian resettlement students and their families, hosted by The Westwood Academy .
This initiative, spearheaded by Amanda Millican, EAL Coordinator for Coventry City's Ethnic Minority Achievement Service, aimed to bridge the gap in career information for students with EAL.
Sally Linsell and Sophie Florance from the KMAT careers team helped to organise the session and provided targeted resources for families across the city which were translated into the Ukranian language.
The evening featured insightful presentations from a range of guests, including Sally, Amanda, Robert Jones from Coventry College and CU Coventry at Coventry University , alongside Natalia and Ros from Refugee Education UK - an important charity breaking down barriers between young refugees and educational opportunities - who had travelled from London to support.
The presentations were translated simultaneously by Mariia Zoria, TWA learning support, who stepped up to the challenge impressively.
A standout moment was hearing from Kiril Faletych, who was introduced by TWA EAL co-ordinator, Suzette Gillman. Kiril is a Year 12 student at TWA who has achieved remarkable success by passing 8 GCSEs after joining us in Year 10 and is now pursuing A levels in Maths, Computer Science, and Economics. He has high aspirations and certainly embodies the KMAT ethos of excellence and the Westwood mantra that 'Better Never Stops'.
Parents expressed their gratitude for the support and information shared during the event, highlighting its importance.
We're proud to have been part of this inspiring initiative and look forward to expanding our efforts in support of these talented young individuals!
