WELL DONE TAMLA
After leaving the sixth form I gained an apprenticeship working at The Woodlands Academy as an ICT Technician. The time has now come to move on. I am starting a new job on Monday in Birmingham as ICT Support around the Midlands, with a company car included.

“Hello from the sunshine state! I am currently working in Miami, Florida! After finishing university (Geography at Brighton) I started working for Bupa Global. I am a trainer and coach for the staff there and have been given the opportunity to move to Miami for 3 months to train the American guys on what we do!”
“I hope you are well. I have meant for a long while to reply to your update emails so this time I've promised myself that I would! It is actually scary to think that has been just over seven years since I left school. I can't believe how the time has flown by. You may remember that when I left Westwood I went to Coventry University. At the time, I thought the world had ended because it wasn't my first choice, but looking back, I wouldn't have changed the way it all turned out! I graduated in 2011 with a First in Accounting and Finance. My course was a four year sandwich and in my third year I completed an industrial placement at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Birmingham. They offered me a full-time role after I graduated so I re-joined them in 2011 where I spent three years working in their Assurance line of service as an External Auditor. Whilst I was with PwC I completed my ACA professional exams and qualified as a Chartered Accountant last October. I've recently decided to move on from audit and in the summer I joined Jaguar Land Rover in their Finance department. I work as a finance business partner to the Purchasing department, in a new role that supports purchasing for JLR's new engine manufacturing facility in Wolverhampton. There has been a lot to learn but I'm really enjoying having an exciting new challenge!”
“Things are going pretty well for me, I didn’t go to University in the end.
I’ve just been working things out on my own, Still doing lots of music playing gigs and producing for other people, and working with some major labels which has been nice.
Lately I have been doing some music for events and promotional stuff for Topman, and for Vogues coverage of fashion, film festivals etc.
Also still doing the art stuff making visuals for people. I am currently working on a project that’s going to be at the Tate Modern in March.
I’m also working on starting my own business of designing and making boutique music equipment along with a few other things.
All the while making ends meet by doing odd jobs for friends of friends, just finishing up working for an ice sculpture company that’s doing an event in Hyde Park for the “Winter Wonderland”. So yeah, all in all pretty good, constantly overwhelmed with work but it seems to be paying off”
“Well into my 2nd year at Sheffield Hallam with a shed load of work right now, after getting a 2:1 for last year without much effort. Also, we have to do a placement module for 2015 between April and May. I'm currently in the process of applying to go to a school in Thailand”
“I'm still working at a primary school where I teach PE and I now run my own dance classes for children too. Very long busy days but I love it!”
“I am currently doing a PhD at the University of Leicester in the Sociology department - my study is a comparative study on young South Asian people’s experiences of sport in Leicester, Bradford and Birmingham. I managed to get a funded position which was great - so now I get paid to be a student! I’m also lecturing at the University of Wolverhampton one day a week which is brilliant for experience and of course the extra cash.”
“When I left Westwood I was still unsure what I wanted to do and knew that I didn't want to go to University yet. I took a year out of education and worked with my dad in Worcester to decide what I wanted to do. I have now secured myself my job at Foxford School, which is where I am today. I decided to stick with IT and have not looked back since. I started a level 2 apprenticeship in IT support and am nearing the end of my level 3, however I am looking to push my career in programming and software development. As part of my apprenticeship, I did a specialised study in networking for 2 years.”
“After I finished university I went to live in Australia with my girlfriend, who is Australian (we met in New York, while working at a special needs camp in 2009) We both then came back to live in Coventry in 2012 and we married in June 2014! I am currently in the process of applying for a Visa for Australia, as that's where we plan to settle. With regards to work, when I came back to the UK I worked as a Special Needs Teaching Assistant. I am now a Senior Support Worker, working for a company called Fine Futures. We support adults with various learning difficulties and disabilities.”
“Well firstly I would like to say I miss Sixth Form, I don't know if that is normal or not but it’s so different being here at De Montfort University than I thought it would be. So much has changed the past couple of months mostly for the better I think. University was so scary the first week but time has literally flown by and I’m now on week 7 of lectures and my first assignment is due in week 9. It’s a crazy atmosphere here but in a way good.
On top of all my first year work I have also joined the DMU Music Society where every week (well nearly every week) me and my flatmates get up and perform in front of about 200 people!! (Never thought I would be doing that) Life at university is hectic but also enjoyable.”
Currently in my 4th year of university as I’ve changed onto the MComp version of Computer Security with Forensics, so currently working through that. I Am also working at an Apple store at Meadowhall, Sheffield, as a Genius, (repairing macs and iphones, technical appointments etc).
Successfully joined the RAF as an airman on the 11/12/13. He is currently based at RAF Boulmer in Northumberland as an Aerospace Systems Operator.
“I am currently trying to get myself onto a Masters programme, possibly at LSE, but also applying elsewhere. I am also applying for graduate programmes (Civil Service, National Audit Office as well as few consultancy firms) but sadly there are so many stages that I won't know if I have got one until next year. They are going well so far and I have a couple of assessment centres coming up. I spent the summer interning in the Department for Work and Pensions in Whitehall, working in Labour Market Trials and Labour Market Strategy. On the degree front currently straddling the 2:1/1st boundary and working hard on my dissertation. “
A recent update from Chloe Wood....
"I am still working at Warwick Auctions, and I think it's going really well. In June I took to the rostrum and had a go at Auctioneering, I haven’t even been there a year! Last week I was entered into the NAVA novice auctioneer of the year competition which is….just mad! I’m really loving it and I’m glad I took this route rather than University.”
Masters in International Development at Birmingham
1st class honours Nottingham University
“Well I went to university but unfortunately made the decision to cut my time at Liverpool Hope University short, as of January. The uni life was fun and I've made some amazing friends who I still see as often as I can. It just so happens that the course just wasn't for me in the end. Since then I have been working at my Step Dad's recruitment company. It's a small company that specialises in recruitment highly specified and technical engineers and things alike. It's actually really fun! Because all the jobs are so interesting and technical I guess it makes it fun to recruit
In July in enrolled in a Recruitment and Sales apprenticeship with the company to train me up and ensure that I have an official qualification. Once I have completed my one year in my apprenticeship I then get a promotion within the company which is nice. I've also made the decision to enrol onto a Business Development course as soon as I've completed this year so I have another qualification under my belt and could possibly progress even further.”
BA (Hons) in Primary Education
“I didn't go to University but I feel like I'm doing a lot with my life now so I thought I'd give you an update. I'm now working as a trainee paralegal for Forbes Solicitors, a firm that is spread across the north west, and I'm based in Blackburn. I started there as an office assistant but got the promotion after only a few months because of my capabilities. Just goes to show you don't need a degree to get a decent job.”
Craig Roberts Bsc Hons in Geography, MSC Planning from Cardiff university.
Craig Roberts Graduated from Cardiff University in July 2014 with an MSc in town planning practice and research. Currently working for a private town planning consultancy firm and working towards a chartered town planning qualification (MRTPI)
NVQ level 2 Hospitality and Level 3 Professional Cookery at Henley College
“I graduated with a Distinction from my masters at Loughborough in December 2013. I then stayed on at the University in a Researcher position for the next six months. I originally only intended to stay for 1 month, but I kept being assigned new projects which was nice. During this time I worked my way through the rounds of a few graduate schemes. Although I got to the final stage in one, unfortunately it didn't come off.
In June I took a job with a small Executive Search company in London comprising a team of five that have worked together for years and recently broken away to start their own enterprise. Here I am in charge of all research and documentation, from mapping the market to producing pitch materials and writing policy papers for our clients. In terms of an introduction to the working world, the people I work with couldn't be nicer or have worked harder to integrate me into their team. They see me as a long term investment, eventually heading my own team as the company continues to expand. Although I'm enjoying it, I'll probably look to move into the public sector in the next 12-24 months. I'm too much of an idealist for the professional services industry and need to feel that I'm making a tangible difference in my role.
And now to my news... I'm not sure if you remember, but when my year left Westwood each leaver was given a plastic golden trophy with a personalised tag stating what we were most likely to do. I still have my trophy, and the tag is inscribed with 'Most likely to lift the Rugby World Cup'.
Unfortunately I was not part of the Women's Union team that lifted the trophy in France earlier this year, but there is still hope for me yet. I started playing touch rugby socially at Loughborough this time last year, and today I have been announced as part of the women's team to travel to Australia to contest the Touch World Cup next year. A pretty long and hard journey lie ahead, but I'm thrilled and still cannot believe that I am going to be representing my country.”
First Class Honours in 2011 at University of Bristol
(1989-2010) Army Counter IED task force served in Afghanistan
“I finally graduated from Southampton University with a 2:1 in Environmental Science. It took a year longer than it should have because I moved course, but I got there eventually! I definitely spent more time playing rugby than I did studying- I've played for Hampshire County and I was the Southampton University Women's Rugby Club president in my last year. Right now I'm in New Zealand! Don't know if you've ever been, but it sure is beautiful. We spent six months travelling and volunteering in Australia, are doing the same for two months in NZ, then we're going to Fiji for a couple of weeks before heading to the USA. Australia was INSANE. We lived on a horse rescue farm in the mountains, worked on a liveaboard boat on the Great Barrier Reef for a week, saw a thunderstorm in the desert over Uluru (Ayers Rock), learned to surf and saw in 2014 at the New Year's celebrations in Sydney. I do however have to be back by September because I've been accepted to do a fully-funded Masters in Nuclear Science and Technology. After that I'm fairly keen to do a PhD, but I'll see how I get on with the whole postgraduate study thing.”
First-class degree (MSc Hons) in Biochemistry from Hertford College
“I'm glad you heard back from UCL, it’s been a long journey since departing sixth form 4 years ago! As for my next moves, I will be staying in academia and will be studying for a PhD in Chemistry at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh.”
First Class in International Marketing and Business (BA, Hons), from De Montfort University
“I'm halfway through my Classical Civilisation degree at Warwick, and really enjoying university life. Classics turned out to be a great choice of subject. I'm learning Latin and Ancient Greek, and studying ancient history, literature, philosophy and art. It's intense but really interesting. One of the highlights of last year was going on a Classics Tour to Athens. I work part-time as a steward at the Mead Gallery, in the Warwick Arts Centre, and during my holidays I've been lucky enough to do some intern work for Bettany Hughes, a writer and broadcaster in the field of Ancient History.”
First Class music and Education Studies Degree
Graduated with a 2:2 in Business Strategy and Management
Emloyed as a Microsoft Sales Apprentice for Trinity Expert Systems.
“Work is going well, I am still with Trinity and have recently been promoted to join the Major Accounts team as an Account Support, with aims to become Account Manager within the next 12 months.
University is going well also, I am now in my 3rd year with one more remaining, currently on target for a minimum 2:1 (hopefully a 1:1)”
